Day 4

This service week has been a very work-centered time, and all of the students have been so productive and efficient. The past three days, we packed food for the Feed My Starving Children organization, and today we cleaned out trash cans around the school as well as the giant coolers that are used for the Tecate service trip. It was a little bittersweet for me since I will be graduating and won’t be able to go to Tecate again, but it was nice to know that I’m still helping out in a way.

It’s a good feeling to know that the food that we packed will benefit people all over the world and that the cleaning that we do around TKA’s campus will benefit the rest of the school.

Day 4

Today is the last day of our service, and the first time we haven’t had to wear hairnets all week! It’s strange to move on from working with Feed My Starving Children, but it’s amazing to be able to serve so many different communities while still on campus. All in the span of a couple days we’ve been able to reach out to communities of malnourished children in Africa, kids in the Bay Area who’ve been affected by fire, people in retirement centers, and our own teachers and staff through cleaning up the school. Today I helped clean out one of the classrooms, and look forward to making stuffed animals later after lunch! I’m happy with the feeling that we’ve really made a difference this week, and can’t wait to continue the spirit of serving others in the next few years beyond Kings.

Day 4

After lunch, the students stuffed 110 cloth animals that will be given to the Sunnyvale Fire Department. When they go  out on calls, the firefighters give them to children who need to be comforted. The students also each wrote two letters about themselves. The letters are going to older adults in assisted-living centers in Sunnyvale and Minnesota.

Day 3 Devotions

Mrs. Stephanie Huber gave a devotion this morning explaining "Resurrection Eggs." These eggs are a Christian Easter tradition. There are twelve eggs that contain:

  • Egg 1: LEAF representing Palm Sunday
  • Egg 2: 3 DIMES representing the 30 pieces of silver which was the price for which Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus,.
  • Egg 3: TOWEL representing Jesus washing the feet of the disciples as an act of service
  • Egg 4: BREAD representing the Last Supper
  • Egg 5: ROSE PETAL representing the Garden of Gethsemane the location of Jesus' sorrowful time of prayer and subsequent betrayal and arrest.
  • Egg 6: ROPE representing what was used to bind Jesus' hands.
  • Egg 7: THORN representing the painful crown put on him as the Romans mocked him as "King."
  • Egg 8: WOOD representing the cross.
  • Egg 9: NAIL representing the stakes used to nail Jesus to the cross.
  • Egg 10: LINEN representing the cloth wrapped around Jesus' dead body.
  • Egg 11: ROCK representing the boulder that sealed Jesus' tomb.
  • Egg 12: EMPTY representing the Resurrection

She encouraged the students to educate themselves and ask questions about the death and resurrection of Jesus. She recommended they read "The Case for Easter" by Lee Strobel

Day 3

For the past three days, our portion of the school work diligently to prepare the rice packs that would eventually be sent overseas. I spent most of my time in the warehouse preparing the boxes to be shipped each time labeling taping and drawing a heart on each one.

I estimated roughly 90,000 meals would be packed. But in the end, we had packed 108,864 meals, enough to feed 289 children 3 meals a day for a year!  I realized anyone who has time can make an impact.

Day 3

Feed My Starving Children is an amazing organization that allowed us to help fight world hunger. I had so much fun working with my team to pack the bags of food. This was such a fun experience, and I hope I can work with this organization again.

Day 2 Devotions

Anjali Chandra, Grade 10, gave a wonderful devotion this morning. First, she talked about why we serve. She pointed to Mark 10:45 "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  As Christians, followers of Christ, we should strive to be like Christ and use our gifts to His power and glory (1Peter 4:10 "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.") Anjali referenced Mathew 15:35 as a very fitting verse for "Feed My Starving Children":  "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.." Then, Anjali spoke about why she believes in Jesus: 1) Jesus Loves Us (John 3:16) 2) He Died to Pay for My Sin (Romans 3:23) and 3) He Defeated Death Through Resurrection (Romans 10:9) She concluded that packing food may seem like a small thing but it fulfills what Jesus asks of each of us 1 John 3:23 "And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us."  Thank you, Anjali, for this beautiful devotion and reminder, especially during this Easter Season, of what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

Day 2

It has been a great experience working with Feed My Starving Children! From the occasionally spilled rice to watching videos, packing all the food, and meeting new people, I've really enjoyed learning more about the organization and its cause. It's amazing to see all the progress we've made and I can't wait for what the rest of the week holds!

Day 2

Today, we continued packing food for the children. I think it is such an honor and privilege to serve the Lord by serving the kids. Watching the documentaries about the children helped me understand how our small act of service is making such a big impact on the people that don't even know when they will even have their next meal. I am truly thankful for this opportunity and am excited to continue this service project.

Day 1

Today, we started with a devotional in the W building. We watched videos about the positive impact of the FMSC organization in areas where children don’t have food to eat. I started by packing soy and then moved on to the veggies.

Day 1

It has been an incredible experience so far. There is something so satisfying about knowing you are preparing meals that could make a difference in hundreds of lives. These opportunities have allowed me to connect with my peers as we try to help communities all over the planet. I am excited for what the rest of the week holds, and I hope that or drive to serve others stays strong.

Day 1 Devotion

Mrs. Stephanie Huber, Assistant Dean, talked about the meaning of Passover Week. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, knowing the trials and tribulations before him, including death. Jesus knew he had a purpose and God was asking him to do something important, but it wasn't easy for him as we know from his prayers to God in the Garden of Gethsemane ("Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.’ Then, he added: ‘If this cup cannot pass by, but I must drink it, your will be done!’" (Matthew 26:42).  Mrs. Huber explained that if we are filled with the Holy Spirit, it will guide us and protect us as we encounter trials and tribulations. She demonstrated this by first putting an empty balloon over a flame, which then burst into many pieces. A balloon filled with "the Holy Spirit," symbolized by water, could withstand the flame!

Overview

Our team of 110 students and 13 adults will be staying on the TKA campus during service week.  Monday through Wednesday, April 11 -13, we will be packing food for an organization called Feed My Starving Children (see details below).

We will hand-pack rice, soy, dried vegetables and a nutritionally complete blend of vitamins and minerals into bags and then seal, box, and place the meals on pallets to be shipped to hungry children around the world.

On Thursday, April 14, we will be beautifying our campus by participating in a variety of on-campus activities.

Who is Feed My Starving Children? A Christian nonprofit founded in 1987, Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is committed to feeding God’s starving children hungry in body and spirit. To a starving child, hope can only begin with a reliable source of nutritious food. FMSC exists to eradicate hunger and provide that hope in Jesus’ name. FMSC meals allow children to develop healthy bodies so they can go to school, earn a living and bring prosperity to their families, communities and nations. Hunger becomes hope. And it starts with food.

How We Work: FMSC produces three special MannaPack™ meal formulas developed by food scientists and nutrition professionals to assist in preventing and reversing undernutrition. FMSC meals are prayed over after every meal packing shift. The food is then donated to carefully selected missions and humanitarian organizations worldwide that pay for shipping costs and use FMSC meals to operate orphanages, schools, clinics, and feeding programs FMSC also partners regularly with churches as well as civic groups, businesses, and public schools. FMSC meals are given to the hungriest children, regardless of their faith. All of God’s children deserve to be fed.

Among Hunger Charities, FMSC is Unique In Five Ways:

  1. Christian mission
  2. Scientifically-developed meal formulas
  3. Meal production by volunteers
  4. Network of embedded in-country food distribution partners
  5. Nutritious meals that enable sustainable progress
